I'm kinda of doing everything; I only hoard specific materials like break-offs or rare/key components, I craft regularly with some things (mostly S3), I MP things from missions that I don't normally run for 3 days (afterwards it gets incinerated), and I incinerate things that other people run regularly (S1 and S2 regular drops or gold and silver ore).
It doesn't have to be, but it's supremely outdated. The drop rate was actually adjusted at the start of season 3 (over a year ago now), making it FAR better than it was before that. Expertise reduces the amount of materials you need to craft things, so while the system could still use improvement, there are benefits to crafting it with this method if you put in the effort. Champion set in particular is pretty much a vanity item at this point since Everlasting is easier to craft for those leveling 70s.
By the way, you can actually skip the mobs. Either don't aggro them, or wait the 60 seconds to lose aggro if the mob got too far away from you. You can also just use Lion's Roar to breeze through everything. You can restock on Lion's Roar from completing the daily tasks.
