I am a long time player and only spent 50$ for an outfit and hair. But overall if you attend events and find a way to farm gold , you can get free pets, runes and outfits and a lot of other stuff. Works better if you make multiple accounts to power the main account.
As for the game being dead, depends on which server you play. East is kinda lively. Best option is to find an active guild to join.

Evil One: Kill Mobs, Kill pink lizard . Win

Colru: Have 4 ppl, cough at boss. Win

Dragons (All Dragon): It will be dead after second combo, no strats needed.

Keaghan: Treat him like a mob and he will be dead. Also he changes but no difference

All Boss: Treat them as trash mobs. No need to remember attack patterns

Lako: Think of it as a giant earth worm thingy.

Karken: Head rush it, Don't worry about the counter on screen, means nothing

Princess of Dessert: 1st phase It is a troll, Second Phase like first phase but bigger arena

Havan: Hey it that big guy from Princess

Death Shadow: An overgrown reaper mob.

Bark #1: Well before there was an elaborate strategy that involves Team work and switches. but whack at Train.

Juggernaught: hit it

Ulchas: See Jugernaught

Gates of Hell: Destroy four pillars and beat the armadillo, don't worry about chains.

Burning Temple: See Karken
