On-going endgame-related inquiry

Soooo.... i'm fairly new to this game.... and the endgame stuff confuses me quite a bit. I will be coming back to and updating this post w/ further questions regarding endgame things as they accrue.

So.. The initial question i have is regarding 'shards' and specifically what the difference is between abyssal and mysterious (as i believe they are called) shards.
