You are free to make up your own backgrounds on wallpaper engine. There are thousands of free ones on the steam workshop as well.
As for memory usage I have no problem with it. It's designed to turn off when any full screen window is opened up. So it won't really affect anything except boot up time. Even then it's barely noticeable unless you're running a potato.
Pairing wallpaper engine with a good rainmeter just completely transforms your desktop. It's incredibly satisfying. Well worth the $4 for the app imo
